Poetry:With You in Mind—Anna Mebel

With You in Mind

The engineers have made this faulty equipment, but you should still trust them, because they never meant for it to be so faulty. What they wanted was a well-oiled machine, though that’s just an old phrase, this equipment should operate without any oil. Intentions matter. Likewise, just because this person’s affection for you is just short of love, doesn’t mean that his or her affection is inconsequential. Learn to live with all shades of disappointment. Trust engineers.

Anna Mebel lives in Syracuse, NY, a city known for snow & potholes. She’s a MFA candidate in poetry at Syracuse University, and you can find more of her writing at Tinhouse.com, 90s Meg Ryan, and forthcoming in Bodega Magazine and SAND Journal.
